a river of West Africa, which is formed in central Ghana by the junction of its headwaters, the Black Volta, the White Volta, and the Red Volta, which rise in Burkina. At Akosombo in SE Ghana the river has been dammed, creating Lake Volta, one of the world's largest man-made lakes.
